The Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute continues its dedication to excellent care. Once again, we received national awards for our Epilepsy and Stroke care. For more than five consecutive years, our Comprehensive Stroke Center was recognized by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association with its Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for compliance with specific quality and achievement measures outlined by the AHA / ASA for the treatment of stroke patients. In addition, our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit was again recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a level 3 epilepsy center. Level 3 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.
Holy Cross now offers cutting-edge technology including state-of-the-art neuro-imaging. As one of the select few Florida hospitals with the 3 Tesla MRI, our medical team can see abnormalities that go undetected by less sophisticated scanners. We can obtain contrast images without injecting contrast agents. This advanced technology also allows us to see direct activation of brain areas, enabling us to make precise diagnoses in the areas of stroke, tumors, epilepsy and spine disorders.
Our 256-slice CT scanner allows us to perform a brain study in 0.04 seconds, further minimizing patient exposure to radiation. We can now obtain 3D images including “heart-to-brain” vascularization images. In combination with our latest 3D angiogram scanner, this technology further enhances our neuro-interventional management of acute stroke, aneurysms and vascular malformations.
Minimally invasive, image-guided spine surgery - the safest and most precise technique for doctors performing this type of surgery - is made possibly by our O-Arm with Stealth Station. Using sophisticated imaging tools such as a StealthStation and a special O-arm scanner that produces images all around your body, the doctor is able to produce a virtual image of the spine that shows screw placement and trajectory as (s)he operates. The Medtronic Cranial Stealth Navigation Systemallows the surgeon to use image-guidance technology to produce the best visualization during your cranial surgery. The 3D images produced by the system displays the most precise location of surgical instruments and structures in the brain.
Another bonus of our technology: patients with illnesses that include involuntary movements get better imaging because the scanner takes images rapidly and thoroughly.
At Holy Cross, we have broken down geographic barriers to top quality healthcare. If you are an international patient and would like more information about our services, please contact our Global Health Services department or read additional information.
