The Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program is an ACEP-governed national accreditation organization which strives to improve the care of older people presenting to the emergency department. This accreditation system promotes the goals quality of care for older people: enhanced staffing and education; geriatric-focused policies and protocols including transitions of care; quality improvement and metrics; and optimal preparation of the physical environment.
The Chest Pain Center in our Emergency Department is a 6-bed Center that takes a systematic approach to patient management that reduces time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective. The Center also permits monitoring patients when it is not clear if they are having a coronary event.
When you are having a stroke, access to our Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center is critical. The Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center at Holy Cross is known as one of the best centers in South Florida for stroke care. In fact, we're the only hospital in Broward County to use a 256-slice CT scanner to enable effective treatment of wake-up strokes.
Holy Cross has now received the highest designation that the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association confers on a stroke center--the Get With The Guidelines(R) Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus.
The Emergency Department staff includes dedicated MDs, DOs, RNs, LPNs, EKG and Respiratory technicians and phlebotomists. A Spiritual Care Office located within the department gives immediate access to Chaplains.
Holy Cross Hospital takes pride in providing innovative, high quality healthcare. The first in Florida to offer the service, Holy Cross Hospital has utilized the 256 iCT to offer Cardiac CT Angiography (CCTA) since September 2010. The CCTA has demonstrated to be a valuable tool to screen a select group of patients with acute chest pain in the Emergency Room.
Compared to the current standard of care, the non-invasive CCTA is faster, safer, and offers clearer images of the patients' coronary arteries. Its DoseWise technology minimizes patient radiation dose without compromising image quality. Mark Caputo, MD (Chief of Emergency Medicine) and Michael Rush, MD (Chief of Radiology) have developed patient guidelines to efficiently care for patients who meet the criteria.
This state-of-the-art technology allows Holy Cross Emergency Medicine physicians the ability to detect life-threatening illnesses at an early stage, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and lung disease. According to Claudio Smuclovisky, MD, FSCCT (Radiologist, Holy Cross Hospital), "It is well documented that proper use of CCTA in the ER reduces costs, length of stay and is safer than the current [standard of care]."
All services in the Emergency Department are provided by Emergency Medical Staff Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. In keeping with our Core Values and Mission, treatment is available to everyone who seeks it. Upon discharge, patients receive detailed instruction on proper aftercare to ensure a speedy and healthy recovery.
We are known for providing the best care with compassion and expertise. We understand an emergency is never convenient, but there's no reason your emergency room experience shouldn't be.
